The book ‘The Devil In My Head’ by TAIWO JEMIMAH talks about self hate, depression, abuse, love, betrayal and sadness. I was first drawn to the author's literary work, especially YOU MATTER and WHO ARE YOU. She is a writer who sees the need for self discovery and self realization. She knows how to describe emotions with written words. The book title left me with so many questions—Does the devil actually dwell in our heads? and so on. It felt so superstitious but also intriguing and truth be told we all do have this devil in our heads.
The author gave the story of a teenage girl, Julia, who had this devil living in her head. Her journey in overcoming those demons was saddened and hurtful; filled with betrayal, loneliness and hate.
It is a mind-blowing and emotion-triggering plot that leaves you feeling sympathetic and motivated.
“Happiness hated me. It was like happiness knew when I was happy and always found a way to remind me how much of a mistake I was.” These words weakened my bone marrow and gave goosebumps on my skin because I somehow understood the miserable life she had to put up with. The feeling of waking up each day expecting nothing more than pain, sorrow, regrets and constant reminder that you are worthless.
The book is well situated with strong characters expressing their emotions—one can perceive the way they truly felt. The author's use of soliloquy and foreshadowing adds depth to the story but the plot set up is sometimes predictable and patchy.
I recommend ‘The Devil In My Head’ for reader or every teen going through parent abuse, molestation, depression and
navigating life as a teenager. We should not allow the situations or circumstances of the life we live in, determine the end of us.
