Hey, come closer.
My name is Chukwuzaram Ofordebe but my friends call me Zaram, which always got my mom so pissed off. She always wants my name to be called in full. I have been here on earth for a decade and two thousand, five hundred and fifty five days. Well there are only a few minutes remaining because I am currently keeping track of time. It was remaining a few count for the minute hand to clock the next day which was my birthday.
Truth be told. This was the first time celebrating a birthday after sixteen wasted candle wishes. Mom never saw the need to do so much just for a day that reminds you of how old you are becoming but she promised me for a little something for this day, I guess that's why I was obsessed with this day coming forth.
It is finally here. What was Mom's planning?. I couldn't get myself to sleep with these thoughts in my head. Will it be a cake surprise or picnic outing or a day at the amusement park or in the cinema's?
I dozed off only to see the day rise. My room was completely brightened by the morning sunshine. I stretched out my arms and legs, trying to come to terms with the fact that nothing happened; no surprise package and not even a proper birthday wish from her. I was so disappointed and I wanted to chit chat with Wendy, my best friend in full detail after the surprise. I have witnessed different forms of birthday parties and surprises with her that were prepared by her parents. So I thought this time around I would have something to say too about my seventeenth birthday but here I am served breakfast with a plate of disappointment just like a kid in a candy shop, only to leave without any candy.
Well, the day is still young we never can tell what it holds or maybe it is me being hopeful.
After the day work during the early hours of the night, all my expectations and wishful thoughts end up with a ‘Happy birthday Adanne'. What was I expecting from a busy mother, who is working so hard to cater for my needs since I was seven. Yes, I lost my dad in a ghastly motor accident on his way from a business trip. Sometimes the image I have of him become blunt that I would run to the picture of him on my side desk right beside my bed. Ever since then it has been my mother and I. She is the best mom ever but I want some fun and beautiful moments. At least, let her keep a promise when she makes one.
